Bought this for my Dad for Christmas, he said it was the best gift he got! He's a tough guy to please, so it gets my highest recommendation.

This device will be likely be less than what you need. My hope was to use it for camping. The fact is that it discharges quickly while not in use. So mostly it is an expensive rechargeable flashlight.
I would not count on it to start a car.

I bought two of these units (not from amazon). I had a couple of occasions to use it on batteries. Even though I charged the unit, it failed to charge a car battery on about the third battery I tried to charge. These were not back to back chargings but spread over a period of time. Also, the air compressor failed after a while in one unit. Basically I rate these poorly, being trustworthy only as a one shot deal.

If you've ever been stranded with a dead battery, you can imagine how helpful it would have been to own a product like this. The Black & Decker Electromate 400 will not only bail you out of car emergencies, but it also functions as a handy and worthwhile tool to keep in your home. To be brief, here are some things you may want to know about this product if you are considering it:
Pros (and features):
+ Very solid build made with a respectable strength plastic enclosure. Includes a rubberized handle for easy carrying (it weighs roughly 25 pounds)
+ Two 12V, 5 amp DC sockets and two 400 watt peak AC outlets provide a good amount of portable power.
+ The AC outlets are protected from just about everything, including ground faults, overheating, overload, and low battery.
+ Battery life is decent, and this unit provides a built-in power level meter
+ Usable air compressor with a backlit, relatively accurate pressure gauge.
+ Includes a Presta valve adapter, sports equipment needle, and pool toy/air mattress nozzle for the compressor.
+ Plenty of power for a wide variety of cars. This unit may have trouble with some larger engines bearing a thoroughly dead battery, but in most cases it has no trouble starting a vehicle.
+ Included battery clamps are detachable and sturdy.
+ Reverse polarity detection makes jumpstarting a vehicle almost fool-proof.
+ Includes an alternator check feature for determining if a problem exists in your car's charging system.
+ Area light with long lasting, power friendly LEDs.
+ DC cord included for charging the power station in your car.
Cons:
- While still usable, the area light is quite directional and its brightness may not be the answer for your outdoor lighting needs.
- Included battery clamps have a very short cord and the fact that they are detachable may make them easy to leave behind or even lose.
- The DC power sockets provide a somewhat limited (5 amps) amount of power. Don't expect to plug a whole lot into them except phone chargers, portable coolers and the like. Heaters and other power inverters are probably out of the question.
- Non user-replaceable battery
The bottom line:
I would highly recommend this power station for anyone looking for not only a way to fix those little car troubles, but also as an everyday source of power for camping, tailgating, or those caught in a power outage. Just remember to keep the battery topped off every chance you get and this unit will last a long time.
