Piece of junk! September 3, 2010 bignbold Thank God I never had to use this for it's intended purpose! Total waste of money! Charged this thing up as instructed and kept it in the car on standby. Checked it a month or 2 later and it needed charging again, but it simply stopped working and would not take a charge anymore. Thought they were reputable, but I'll never trust Black & Decker again. Should have checked the Internet for all the bad reviews this thing is getting.
When I needed it, it let me down... August 22, 2010 kvan I purchased this in the aftermath of a hurricane two years ago, in hopes of being able to use it to power a fan so we could sleep at night (we were without power for a week). It didn't power the fan, but I was able to use it to play my iPod dock/radio, so we could hear the weather, news, and even a little music.
Two weeks ago, though, when I FINALLY needed the darned thing for its original/main purpose, it FAILED. I even make sure to take it out of my trunk and charge it (all night!) in the wall outlet at least once a month. It didn't matter, though -- my car battery died, and this thing didn't do squat to revive it. What a frustrating piece of poo. It has tainted my view of all Black and Decker products.
Simple does not work! August 14, 2010 Ni9lberto after loading for 15 hours as stipulated in the manual, I did a test with my car (Honda Civic 2008) who had left for three hours with the headlights turn on and thus with the battery partially discharged. After connecting the equipment, put the key in ACC position, Turned on the "Simple Start" and pressed the button "Veicle Boost" However, in less than 3 seconds the middle light was already green, continuously, and the unit already beeping. However, the vehicle did not have enough charge to start the engine. Repeating the car in 2 more cars, and the result is the same. The idea of the product is great, but the project not so much ...
Underpowered, Overpriced and DISCONTINUED August 11, 2010 J. Warters (Somewhere, United States) Received this as a gift a couple of years ago and have kept it in the car for emergencies since then. Occasionally recharged from the DC outlet as I can no longer find the AC adapter (was it ever included?). I have used it as a light and as a DC power supply periodically (for which it receives a generous two stars), but last night when I tried to use it to boost the Jeep battery, it was dead - from simply sitting in the car.
Now, I may have had it in the back too long without recharging (in the summer heat and winter cold), but there are no instructions or cautions that suggest or require periodic recharging and a product of this type should be designed and constructed to withstand normal in-vehicle temperature extremes. When I went to recharge the unit after the last attempted use, the green recharge light lit, but the unit issued a continuous series of very annoying high pitched beeps. Went to the B&D site to investigate the cause and discovered the unit was DISCONTINUED. Found the "manual" on the DeWalt site, but the only suggestion was that continual beeping meant a faulty charging connection which wasn't the case.
Further web search brought me here where I discovered it was still being sold for almost $100. Difficult to believe. Bottom line? This is a marginally functional product with an inadequate manual, DISCONTINUED undoubtedly for lack of sales and limited utility. There are better options out there. Save your money to buy something else - like a years' worth of triple A and a good set of jumper cables.
Best as a heavy Doorstopper August 11, 2010 Oldersnake Dead battery in an airport parking lot late in the evening - just the job for 'Simple Start' - well, it is neither 'simple' not did it 'start' anything.
I 'charged' the unit a few weerks ago to avoid a mishap and gave my jump cable to my spouse.
Proudly plugged the unit in the adapter per instructions and ...nothing. An hourt later and to make a long story short, a ended up flagging down a good samaritan who helped jumped the battery.
Save your hard earned dollars.
